Yesterday we warned fans to hold off on purchasing Funimation’s 4K release of Akira after rumors spread on Twitter that it used a Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) version of the film instead of a High Dynamic Range (HDR) version. Funimation conveniently waited until after the disc came out to confirm this claim.
“We know some of you want to experience the film in the highest-quality format possible,” they stated in a blog post.
Fortunately, they are offering to replace the affected discs with or without a receipt at no additional cost. Instructions for requesting the replacement are as follows:
“For those of you who would like to request the 4K HDR version of AKIRA, please send an email to email@example.com (US/CA) or akira4kreplacementUK@funimation.com (UK/IRE) with “AKIRA 4K” as the subject, and provide your name, mailing address, email address and proof of purchase (receipt or confirmation email and photo of the disc).”
If you no longer have your receipt, or received your copy as a gift, you must send your disc to Funimation.
The replacement discs are expected to ship February 2021.
